An informal clinical tool created by Kim Dillon, M.A., CCC-SLP and Mary Brezik, M.S., CCC-SLP with 28+ years of combined pediatric experience

The tool

Structured data collection, without the formality

This is a browser-based informal speech sound disorder assessment tool built for real pediatric sessions. It gives you a consistent, structured way to measure speech sound accuracy, document specific consonant errors, and identify phonological patterns — then generates a parent-friendly summary before the session ends. It is not a standardized assessment. It is the tool you reach for when you need real data, in real time, with a real kid.

Three ways SLPs use this tool
01Alongside a standardized articulation assessment like the Goldman Fristoe or GFTA-3, to add a play-based conversational sample or give families a more accessible picture of results.
02During speech sound therapy to track PCC progress across sessions with consistent data collection and give families a tangible look at how things are changing.
03As a structured informal screen before deciding whether a full standardized evaluation is warranted.
🧸
2 play-based speaking samples
A structured play activity and naturalistic conversation — each 2-3 minutes, each with its own correct and incorrect consonant tally. PCC calculates per sample automatically.
📊
Live PCC calculation
Tap the correct and incorrect consonant counters as you listen. Overall PCC and a live severity bar update in real time — no math, no clipboard.
🔤
Full consonant inventory
Organized by developmental age — early developing sounds (by age 3) and later developing (ages 3-6). Mark each as deletion, substitution, or distortion and write in exactly what the child said.
🔁
Phonological processes
Check the processes observed — Fronting, Backing, Stopping, Gliding, Cluster Reduction, Final Consonant Deletion, and more. Each includes a parent-friendly definition in the PDF.
🧠
Motor planning checklist
An observational checklist for motor planning characteristics — inconsistent errors, groping, vowel errors, and syllable segregation — with a notes field.
📄
Instant parent summary PDF
One click generates a personalized, multi-page results PDF with PCC score, severity, consonant errors, phonological patterns, and a recommendation — branded with your practice name.
About PCC

What is Percent Consonants Correct?

PCC measures how accurately a child produces consonant sounds in conversational speech. It is calculated by dividing the number of correctly produced consonants by the total consonants attempted across a 2-3 minute naturalistic speaking sample.

Correct consonants ÷ Total consonants attempted × 100 Based on Shriberg and Kwiatkowski (1982) — a foundational framework in pediatric speech-language pathology

PCC gives you a consistent, objective way to describe severity and track change over time. This tool calculates it automatically as you tally — so you can stay focused on the child, not the math.

PCC scoreSeverityWhat it means
Greater than 85%MildMost consonants correct. Speech is generally easy to understand.
65% to 85%Mild-ModerateSeveral sounds affected. May sometimes impact how well others understand.
50% to 65%Moderate-SevereMany sounds affected. Intelligibility is significantly impacted.
Below 50%SevereMost consonants affected. Significant impact on being understood.
In session

From first tally to parent summary in one session

1
Set up your practice once, 2 minutes
Enter your practice name and clinician credentials on the setup screen. It saves automatically — your name appears on every PDF you generate from that point forward.
2
Tally during the speaking sample
Work through two 2-3 minute speaking samples — a structured play activity and a naturalistic conversation. Tap the correct and incorrect consonant counters as you listen. PCC per sample and overall calculates automatically.
3
Document specific errors and patterns
Work through the consonant inventory organized by developmental age. Mark whether each sound was deleted, substituted, or distorted — and write in exactly what the child said. Check off phonological processes and any motor planning characteristics observed.
4
Download and share before they leave one click
Generate a personalized parent summary PDF with the PCC score, severity classification, consonant errors with parent-friendly explanations, phonological process cards, and a recommendation — all branded with your practice name.

“

We needed a consistent way to collect PCC data, document what we were actually hearing, and explain it to families in plain language. Nothing quite existed, so we built it.

Questions

Things people ask us

Is this a standardized assessment?
No, and that is intentional. This is an informal clinical tool designed to complement your formal standardized assessments, not replace them. PCC severity ranges are based on Shriberg and Kwiatkowski (1982). Always use your clinical judgment alongside the results.
How is this different from the Goldman Fristoe or GFTA-3?
Standardized tools give you norm-referenced scores from specific picture-naming tasks. This tool captures PCC from naturalistic play-based conversational speech, which gives you a different and complementary data point. Many SLPs use both.
What age range is this appropriate for?
The consonant inventory is organized by developmental norms — early developing sounds (by age 3) through later developing sounds (ages 3–6). Most appropriate for children ages 2 through early school age.
Does it work on an iPad or tablet?
Yes. It works in any modern browser on any device. Tapping the correct and incorrect counters during a session is especially easy on a tablet or iPad.
Can I use this for more than one child?
Absolutely. Use the Reset button between sessions to clear the data. Your practice info stays saved. One license covers unlimited sessions with your own clients.
Do I need to download or install anything?
Nothing at all. The tool opens in your browser from a link. Bookmark it and it is ready any time. The parent PDF downloads directly in your browser with one click.
How do I get access after purchasing?
You will receive an email immediately after checkout with your tool link and access instructions. Bookmark the link and open it for any session going forward.

Better data. Clearer conversations. Happier families.

Whether you use it alongside a standardized tool, during therapy, or as a structured informal screen — consistent PCC data and a parent summary ready before the session ends.
